Shell Rotella vs Chevron Delo vs Mobil Delvac: Choosing Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Oil
October 13, 2026 · RPS Distributors
Walk into any truck shop and you will hear strong opinions about diesel engine oil. Shell Rotella, Chevron Delo and Mobil Delvac are the three names most fleets trust. The good news: all three make high-quality oils that meet the latest industry standards. The right choice comes down to your engine's spec, the grade you need and your price per gallon.
First, understand the API ratings
For modern heavy duty diesel engines, look for the API service category on the bottle:
- API CK-4 — the current standard for most diesel engines. It is backward compatible with older categories such as CJ-4, so it works in most older trucks too.
- API FA-4 — a lower-viscosity category designed for better fuel economy in certain newer engines. It is not backward compatible. Only use FA-4 if your engine maker approves it.
When in doubt, check the owner's manual or the OEM approval list (Cummins, Detroit, Volvo/Mack, PACCAR and others).
15W-40 or 5W-40?
- 15W-40 is the workhorse grade for most diesel trucks, equipment and pickups. It is the most popular choice for mixed fleets.
- 5W-40 full synthetic flows faster on cold starts, which matters in Northeast winters. It costs more but offers better protection at low temperatures.
- 10W-30 is common in newer engines tuned for fuel economy.
The three brands at a glance
| Brand | Popular products | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| Shell Rotella | T4 Triple Protection 15W-40, T5 synthetic blend 10W-30, T6 full synthetic 5W-40 | Strong brand recognition with owner-operators and pickup drivers |
| Chevron Delo | Delo 400 SDE 15W-40, Delo 400 XSP synthetic | Long-standing fleet favorite with wide OEM approvals |
| Mobil Delvac | Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40, Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 | Popular with large fleets and off-road equipment |
All three are available in quarts, gallons, cases, pails and drums. Many fleets pick one brand and standardize on it to simplify inventory.
Tips for fleets and shops
- Standardize on one or two grades to reduce stock and mistakes.
- Buy in pails or drums for shop use — the cost per gallon drops sharply.
- Change filters with every oil change. See our heavy duty filter range below.
- Keep oil sampling records if you extend drain intervals.
