Shop Spill Control: How to Choose and Use Oil Absorbents

October 24, 2026 · RPS Distributors

Every repair shop deals with spills — oil, coolant, transmission fluid and brake fluid. A slippery floor is one of the most common causes of injuries in a shop. Handling spills quickly keeps workers safe and the shop looking professional.

Choose the right absorbent

  • Clay absorbent (such as Oil-Dri) — the classic choice for oil, grease and coolant on concrete floors. Low cost and easy to sweep up.
  • Absorbent pads and rolls — good for drips under vehicles and around equipment.
  • Socks and booms — help contain a larger spill so it does not spread.

How to clean up a spill

  1. Stop the source if it is safe to do so.
  2. Contain the spill so it does not spread or reach a floor drain.
  3. Spread absorbent over the spill and let it soak.
  4. Sweep up the used absorbent and store it in a labeled container.
  5. Clean the floor with a degreaser to remove the remaining film.

Disposal

Used absorbent with oil or chemicals may need special disposal. Follow your local and state rules and your waste hauler's guidance.
