Truck Suspension and Air Springs: 7 Signs It's Time for Replacement
October 24, 2026 · RPS Distributors
Air springs and shock absorbers carry the load on heavy trucks and trailers. When they wear out, the truck rides rough, tires wear unevenly and cargo can be damaged. Catching problems early saves money and downtime.
7 signs of suspension wear
- Air leaks. A hissing sound or an air spring that will not hold pressure.
- Cracks or bulges in the rubber of the air spring.
- Uneven ride height. One side of the truck or trailer sits lower than the other.
- Leaking shocks. Oil on the outside of the shock absorber body.
- Bouncing or rough ride. The truck keeps bouncing after bumps.
- Uneven tire wear. Cupping or scalloping on tires can point to worn shocks.
- Worn bushings and mounts. Clunks or play in suspension joints.
Inspection tips
- Check air springs and shocks during every PM service.
- Listen for air leaks with the system fully aired up.
- Look for rubbing or chafing where air springs contact other parts.
- Check that the ride height valve is working and set correctly.
Replace in pairs
Shocks and air springs are usually replaced in pairs on the same axle so both sides work evenly.
Do not ignore winter damage
Road salt, cold rubber and potholes are hard on suspension parts. A quick inspection after winter can catch damage before it becomes a breakdown.
