Winter Wiper Blades and Washer Fluid: What to Use and What to Stock
October 20, 2026 · RPS Distributors
In winter, clear visibility is a safety issue. Road salt, slush and ice wear out wiper blades faster than any other season, and summer washer fluid can freeze in the reservoir. A quick check now saves a dangerous drive later.
When to replace wiper blades
Most drivers should replace blades every 6 to 12 months. Replace them sooner if you see:
- Streaks or smears across the glass
- Chattering or skipping
- Cracked, split or hardened rubber
- Bent frames or worn connectors
A good rule: put fresh blades on in the fall, before the first snow.
Beam blades vs conventional blades
- Conventional (frame) blades use a metal frame with pressure points. They are affordable and fit most older vehicles. In winter, ice and snow can pack into the frame and stop the blade from sitting flat.
- Beam blades have no exposed frame. A curved spring steel band spreads pressure evenly along the blade, so there is less for ice to grab. They are the better choice for snowy climates.
Choosing washer fluid for winter
Summer "bug wash" fluid can freeze in the reservoir and lines. Before winter:
- Switch to a winter or de-icer washer fluid rated for low temperatures (check the rating on the jug).
- Run the washers until the new fluid sprays to clear out old fluid.
- Keep an extra jug in the trunk or cab — you use far more in slush and salt.
- Never use plain water in winter. It freezes and can crack the reservoir.
What shops and stores should stock
Wiper blades and washer fluid are top impulse buys at gas stations and parts counters once the snow starts. Keep a range of the most common blade sizes (16" to 26") and plenty of winter washer fluid by the case.
RPS Distributors carries Bosch Direct Connect, Bosch Clear Advantage beam blades, ANCO 31 Series, ANCO Beam, Peak Max-Vision and Clear Plus wiper blades, plus winter washer fluid and de-icer. Shop our Wiper Blades collection and Car Fluids & Chemicals collection.
