WD-40 vs PB Blaster vs Brake Cleaner: Which Shop Spray to Use and When
October 8, 2026 · RPS Distributors
Walk into any repair bay and you will find WD-40, PB Blaster and brake cleaner within arm's reach. They look alike, but they do very different jobs. Using the right can saves time, and using the wrong one can create a safety problem.
WD-40: water displacer and light lubricant
WD-40 Multi-Use is best for displacing moisture, light lubrication and loosening mild grime. It is great for drying out wet electrical connectors, freeing sticky hinges and protecting tools from surface rust.
It is not a heavy-duty penetrant and it is not a long-term grease. For hinges, chains and slides that need lasting lubrication, follow up with a grease or dedicated lubricant.
PB Blaster: penetrating oil for seized parts
PB Blaster is a penetrating catalyst made to creep into rust and corrosion. It is the go-to for seized bolts, exhaust hardware, suspension parts and anything that has sat through a few winters of road salt.
Tips for best results:
- Spray, wait 10–15 minutes, then try again. Give badly rusted parts a second coat.
- Tap the part with a hammer to help the penetrant work into the threads.
- Combine with heat only where it is safe — never near the spray itself, as aerosols are flammable.
Brake cleaner: degreaser that leaves no residue
Brake cleaner removes brake fluid, grease and dust from brake parts and evaporates without leaving a film. Shops also use it to clean parts before applying sealant or threadlocker.
There are two main types:
- Non-chlorinated — the most common choice. It is flammable, so keep it away from sparks and open flame.
- Chlorinated — non-flammable and fast-drying, but its fumes are more hazardous. Never use chlorinated brake cleaner near welding or high heat, because it can break down into toxic gas.
Always use brake cleaner in a well-ventilated area and read the label. Some cleaners can damage plastic and rubber parts.
